Polka Nuts 8-22-2010 Polka Lover's Club Golden CO
Here is the start of a song. My battery went dead. Sorry.
Dulcimer is a big part of the Polka Nuts. After the first set the band switches it up. The dulcimer player can also play drums and accordion. The accordion player also plays dulcimer, but with a much softer tone. The trombone players switches between drums and saxophone. I personally like the saxophone best as it totally changes the tone of the band.

Pulaski Wisconsin 7-22-2010
Rain Rain go away. Come again another day and not to Pulaski Wisconsin at Polka Days weekend festival.
Bumpy airplane ride and delayed lines at Midwest to check in at the airport should have been our first clue to buckle up honey we not in Kansas any more.
We stopped off at Oliver Garden for a bowl of soup and salad. Middle of the summer and soup sounded good on a damp heavy rainy day.
After checking in the Comfort Inn and a quick lingering nap, it seemed a good day to sleep in and read a good book. But the Pulaski Polka Days Festival beckoned us just 20 minutes down the street from Green Bay.
I brought my dancing shoes, a couple of pair of sandals that I could dance with and wore sneakers. Water puddles in some areas through the festival grounds and trickled through small ditch dug around the area to divert the flow from the tents.
The rain a subsided but know sign of sunshine today. I never thought in my wildest dreams that in mid-summer I would be wearing a pair of jeans and jacket to dance. The chill in the air was just enough to make those clothes comfortable.
The floor were not waxed up and dancing in tennis shoes presented a challenge. Time to really lift those feet and legs up even if they were old and tire.
If the folks from Wisconsin could make it look easy, at least I could give it try.
The music was great. Four bands played the first day. This festival celebrated young people in Polka. There were two stages (big tents) with wooden floors laid of plywood or planks worn smooth from years of festival use.
One side of the stage had the old generation band and an hour later the young muscians played on the other side.
Roger Majeski and the Harmony Kings showed seasoned talent while Aaron Socha's Livewire carried on the tradition.
Marosxek Brothers played classical polkas while the related but younger New Generation set the stage a fire with their energy and new approach to traditional music.
Here are some examples.

ButtonBox Jamming at the Illinois Polkafest 2-6-2010
A special room was set up at the hotel for musicians to gather for a jam session. Around 9:30 on Saturday and Sunday people would drift into the room, take out their button box accordions, piano accordions and play some music. Dick and Kathy started it off. They knew the music well. Slovenian, Polish, Czech and German songs were played through three times. As soon as the box was out of the case, musicians joined in the playing. A banjo player added to the excitement.
Some knew each other from years past. Others knew the music and joined in. They knew what key they were playing in as instruments vary as to the key that is standard.
Sally from Duluth, MN took a rest and loaned her box to Jerry. Ed Collen from NE played triplets on the keyboard around the melody others were playing. Martin and Rok were there youngest at age 18 and 13. They played circles around some of the old timers. At the end of one session, Chuck played a energetic rendition of the Clarinet Polka as others were packing up their boxes. He really went after it. I met Dave Johnson and mentioned that he played pretty good button box Slavic tunes for a Swede. I mentioned I was a part Swede then told him my married name. He said kazuntite.
The room filled with over twenty instruments, mostly button boxes. It was a sound to fill the rafters. The audience was enthralled.
They started with two button boxes and added more.
Ten or more people brought their button boxes to join in the jamming along with banjo and a couple of concertinas. What a big sound.
